Deafly Beating

What did you miss?

Deafly Beating

all day short
she smiles quietly
her heart’s gentle
pitter
patter
alludes to soft
spring rain which
humors the flowers
and the weeds

how long can peace
entomb a restless
heart?

the dewdrops of a
fallen rain
evaporate like the
tears begging to be
released
from a high up cloud

a leap of faith
for a diminutive
tear can’t be achieved
without strength

she lets her smile grow a tad broader
with a smirk dancing behind it
and her strengthened
heartbeat plays like a summer
storm carrying
the rhythm

she’s been here before,
here and back,
stuck in two seasons
waiting

an uneven beating
sensation ricochets
against her
ribs as a
tingling of
regret
             wishing
anger
             sadness
wells up to
soothe her soul

what starts a gentle rumbling
tangles into confusion
and contradiction
before everything comes together
perfectly

peace holds down its casing
of patronization but restlessness
cracks with a deafening roar—
thunder has replaced her heartbeat

lightning has invigorated her soul with a
shock, but how long
can a storm last
before it needs to be
missed again?

  1. When you read at club, it almost looked like you were about to cry during the first few stanzas. Whatever that look was, it really drove your writing home emotionally.

And your writing truly is beautiful.

  2. Thanks Shayli, I'm glad you liked it:)
To James, I don't think I was about to cry so much as I get really shakey when I try and read poems for people. I hope the effect was positive though:) And thank you!
